Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies
Dir. Edward Burns
95 min
Writer-actor-director Edward Burns, who first rose to fame in the 1990s, will join a conversation about his work after the screening, where he will receive the 2026 Golden Key Award. Made in 2019 and only now released, this low-key family drama predates the changes COVID brought, but we can probably all relate to star Jennifer Ehle, a martini-medicated, middle-aged wife and mother to two grown kids who live at home in the affectless, cookie-cutter suburb of the Beatles-inspired title. Her Tina strives to cope with anger and resentment, as financial pressure impacts her marriage to her workaday Joe husband (Burns). Shot in black-and-white, it's a portrait of quiet desperation.
